So after my last UHD friendly drive took a crap, I finally replaced it with an LG WH16NS40.

Checked to see if it'd load a UHD disc. Nope.

Flashed the firmware to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061440 using the groovy SDFtool Flasher.

Now reads and starts ripping the disc but on 2 in a row (2 total) it's failed to rip because of Hashcheck errors.

Is this a bad drive or is it perhaps a firmware (or some other) issue?

You should flash to WH16NS60 1.02 as recommended in the UHD guide. This firmware does better with reading in 3-layer discs.

But most important: Wash your UHDs with liquid soap and warm water. Dry with a paper towel and then wipe with a microfiber cloth as used for glasses. Many UHDs have an invisible film on them which makes them hard to read. So even if they are brand new theay are hard to read by your drive.
