mpv playback - subtitles not displaying properly or at all

When I watch the resulting mkv with mpv, I face some issues. Sometimes, I can't switch to the subtitle track at all. Or maybe I can, but the subtitles are timed improperly. The start time for the line is fine, but it always ends early.

VLC handles the subtitles properly, which is surprising to me, because it has historically not handled complicated .ass subtitles as well as mpv. However, mpv has had trouble with .vtt subtitles before (reversing the order of the subtitles).

I don't want to use VLC. Is there anything I can do to fix these subtitle issues in mpv?
