Is there a step-by-step guide for UHD disks?

MKV playback, recompression, remuxing, codec packs, players, howtos, etc.

Is there a step-by-step guide for UHD disks?

Post by icarus »

I've searched, but I'm either missing it, or am terrible at searching

Is there a full step-by-step guide to processing 4k UHD disks and having all lossless audio/video?

I've been reading the Dolby Vision thread and it seems a lot of people are remuxing and such to get Dolby Vision and also Dolby Atmos/True HD Audio. I haven't been doing this, so I'm just looking for a full work flow/process to get this done.

If you can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Open MakeMKV. Point it at disk. Have it extract everything.

It's only when you ask it to only pull certain parts that you have to worry about what is pulled.

Thank you. So all these post about having to do extra work to get Dolby Vision or Atmos to work is not necessary?

MakeMKV will properly rip Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on a UHD.

As far as I'm aware, no player will properly play it.

All the posts you read about DV on UHDs are to take the bits MakeMKV has copied off the UHD and put it into a form that your player might be able to play. Not all players are the same so there's no single format that works for everything. It is highly player dependent.

In very broad strokes, most streaming boxes (Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, Nvidia Shield, etc.) can play Dolby Vision profile 5. This is the DV profile used for streaming content. There are some players that can play profile 8. MakeMKV makes .mkv files with Dolby Vision in profile 7, the DV profile used on UHDs.
