The Walking Dead- Daryl Dixon missing English subs

Post by sherwood315 » Mon Apr 28, 2025 1:00 pm

Hi,
MakeMKV 1.17.9
Windows 11
Novice here so be kind if you can.
I've ripped thousands of DVD and Blu Ray without problems with subtitles so this is a puzzle for me, so starting to think the discs are bad or AMC has some new CP.
Purchased the steelbook version from Amazon [14381 00405] due to being on sale.
There are no errors or other issues on playback.
I've tried manually downloading srt files.
No English subtitles.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions and feedback.
Kind Regards,
DS

The entry for that title on blu-ray.com suggests it has English, French, & Spanish subtitles. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Walking-Dead-Daryl-Dixon-Season-One-Blu-ray/341595/ Do any subtitles show up?

Thank you for replying
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
To clarify. There are subs on the disc and are added to the MKV file if selected. However, English (forced only) do not automatically show up during playback when French is spoken. Even after selecting only the English (forced only) that is flagged default of the two available.
English subs will show during playback when selected from languages menu but are displayed for all spoken dialogue, not just French. Which in my experiences has shown me how forced is suppose to work.
For creative reasons I know some French is not supposed to be translated so the viewer gets a sense for what Daryl is going through.
To make things worse for me, for storage reasons I convert MKV using handbrake cli with MKV preset "H.264 MKV 1080p30" but end up with English subs always displayed.

Extract the forced subtitles from the mkv with mkvextract which is part of mkvtoolnix. There is also a GUI wrapper available: gMKVExtractGUI
After that, load the subtitle in BDSup2Sub and you can see what exactly is included. If you really want forced subtitles for all French dialogues but the forced subtitles track doesn't provide it you either have to extract them from the full subtitles or search on opensubtitles.org if they have something that you like.
Since most subtitles on opensubtitles.org are srt files (text based), it's way easier to edit them. So you could search for the full subtitles and edit them as you like to make your own forced track.

Accidentally burning in subtitles is a very common mistake and I read it multiple times on this forum. If you can't find the option to turn it off, just deselect it completely and remux it later with mkvtoolnix: re-encoded video + audio, subtitles and chapters from the original mkv file.
