subtitles hdmv pgs won't appear

Post by Dietmar.Harms » Tue Dec 04, 2018 4:41 pm

Hello!

It seems that the subtitle format hdmv pgs is either not converted by MakeMKV, or my BluRay player Samsung HT-F5550 cannot play it. A technician from Samsung stated that my BluRay player can play subtitles in the following formats:

ssa (substation alpha)
asa (advanced substation alpha)
subtil
vobsub

Can I somehow ask MakeMKV to select one of these formats as destination for the converted subtitles, or can I somehow convert the subtitles into one of these formats?

Best, Dietmar

MakeMKV does not convert subtitles - it copies the PGS (Bluray's native) format tracks to the MKV file.

If your BD player won't play BD subtitles, it MAY require them to be compressed, which is what the "wdtv" profile does.

BDSUP2SUB converts PGS to Vobsub but if you need to work on subs anyway, you might as well OCR them to SRT with DVD Subextractor (which also does PGS). I'm astonished to hear your TV does bitmap subs (Vobsub) at all.

It's not the TV.... it's a Bluray Disc player, which is, um, what's a good, non-offensive word for that level of stupidity?

It is always better to use a real Hardware "Media Player" which supports more formats as the build in players from TV or DVD/Blu-ray players with almost very limited support. It makes no sense to convert files/content to (the current) TV or Blu-ray player supported formats, you don't know if the next player works with the "reworked" files/content. And don't forget, with the conversion of HDMV/PGS subtitles to VOBSUB/IDX the higher PGS resolution is lost.
Good Luck :)

I used to use BDSUP2SUB; it makes hidef VOBSUB subtitles equivalent to the PGS originals.

VOBSUB is designed for DVD resolution (max 720x576), so if a program creates VOBSUB images for higher resolutions (f.e. 1920x1080) ... maybe the playing software have problems to show them. And VOBSUB only supports four colors (including background color) which gives a poor anti-aliasing.
Good Luck :)

Which also makes OCRing more difficult.
