Full Backup playback

#1 Post by ChaosEnergy » Sun Dec 07, 2025 7:32 pm

Hello All

in last weeks I did a lot of full backups
I thought maybe during cold winter time i will do some converting into mkv's at the end

But some other ideas came up, like the Video Station of my NAS or Jellyfin
Both are able to playback BDMV folders
but it seems....none of them really good

In jellyfin i cant select the episode of eg Game of Throne Discs
I only get hardware support for the nas, when using an outdated version with high security issue and no recent app supporting the old version, so only browser access, leading to code issues and more transcoding needed

the old video station would allow me to slect each mts file manually, sadly i dont find a naming way to get things like multi episode named correctly, it even messes up between folders of movies, like move 1 , movie 2, movie 3..some mts just get added into the others..

I played around with Kodi, but like Jellyfin no support for Samsung TV

and then i was stupid enough to open my first DVD backup..it plays something...but its one of several extras on that disc, not the movie itself
and unlike the mts files, i cant even chose another file to start with in video station, and surely not jellyfin

i really dont want to carry around a laptop alltime from main tv to secondary
i prefer to avoid also to create all dvd, bluray and 4k into mkvs at the end, when there might be players capable to do it
i m open to buy another firetv, so the samsung tv, has same possibilities like the other 3 tvs in house

so...teach me, how do you get fullbackups played
(and it seems creating a single file from a dvde is even more horror with mixing your own playlists..)

What do you hope to gain by playing the backups instead of .mkv files?

When MakeMKV produces a .mkv file all it is doing is repackaging a title into a single file. It is not compressing or changing the quality.

less work, being lazy
abilitiy to recreate a full disc, in case my original gets damaged
in eg video station you can select the m2ts files so yo can choose movie/episode or the extra content
