MakeMKV not preserving Dolby Vision

#1 Post by sqsh112 » Thu Dec 12, 2024 6:45 am

I am opening an MKV file with Dolby Vision and HDR10 fallback in MakeMKV and then pressing the MakeMKV button to save the file.
Here is the HDR MediaInfo for the original file: Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, Profile 8.1, dvhe.08.03, BL+RPU, no metadata compression, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2086, Version HDR10, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2086, Version HDR10, HDR10 compatible

After I run it through MakeMKV, the resulting file has had Dolby Vision removed for some reason and reads like this in MediaInfo: SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible

Why is MakeMKV suddenly doing this? I had never ran into this problem before now, any help would be appreciated.

MakeMKV usually deals with Profile 7 Dolby Vision from UHDs. I don't have much experience with how it behaves with DV profile 8.1.

If you have a license for MakeMKV, you can use older versions. https://makemkv.com/download/old/

I did try a couple older versions since I also thought maybe it was 1.17.8 but even going back to earliest supported dolby vision version of MakeMKV results in the same. It is probably what you said that it does not work with profile 8 of Dolby Vision, although I recall using it on both files with profile 7 and 8 previously. Could be just me tweaking though
