file size in app vs on disc

#1 Post by gregde » Sun Oct 06, 2024 11:05 pm

Hello -

I've been using makemkv for some time and I've always noticed there is a slight difference in the size of a file as it appears in the UI vs what eventually ends up on disc. But recently, I've seen cases where difference is really quite large.

The most recent example came with the recent release of The West Wing. In the makemkv UI, each disc shows 4 to 5 files of roughly 7GB each:

But after ripping the disc (and not deselecting any tracks), I end up with:

There are example with even larger differences. Any idea what causes this and is it anything to be concerned about?

THanks

Do those titles have multiple audio tracks in several languages? And are you unselecting the audio tracks that aren't useful to you? That often accounts for the difference in size.
