More Commentary issues

Post by Khaziglu »

I have finally gotten around to attempting convert my Batman the Animated Series Deluxe. The issue I am having is that I cannot find the audio track without commentary. I am running in expert mode and see three audio tracks all three say "DD Stereo English"
I have tried picking each track individually and running them both in Plex and VLC to see if there is a way to silence commentary as well as doing the same with all 3 tracks available. They all seem to be commentary tracks. The frustrating thing for me is that I seem to remember not having this problem when I first got the discs. I stopped then when I realized that I was going to have to name all the episodes the hard way due to the difference between the Blu Ray and DVD editions.
I know this has been covered before and I apologize but my searches have not led me to a solution that seems to apply.

It is rare for a disk to have more than one commentary track, but not unheard of. Some I've encountered included Director commentary (Japanese), ADR commentary (English), Voice Actor commentary (Japanese), and Voice Actor (English). But there was always at least one no-commentary track.

A possibility - do you have what looks like two playlists for each episode? A playlist can restrict which audio tracks are shown, and if one of those playlists was part of a "view with commentary" menu entry, they might have the normal tracks disabled.

I doubt it's as stupid as some of the disks from Malaysia that have Malay, Chinese, Japanese, and English tracks, all marked "Eng"...

Can you please post the log file? I can think of two possible bugs:
1 - If MakemKV skips the non-commentary audio track (should be debug codes)
2 - Or if the playlist with comment-only tracks is selected instead of a right one.

The log file should clarify.

Mike #2 is a general problem I have with MakeMKV. it tries to be too smart. if it sees 2 playlists that seem to be the same, it excludes what it perceives as the duplicate, but in the process perhaps removing one's ability to do a rip. I sometimes have to break out mkvtoolnix to find the playlist I need.

I'm unsure why MakeMKV tries to be so smart (or at least not give us an expert mode, where it doesn't be so smart). i.e. just give me all the playlists (sorted preferably, for some reason its not always sorted) and I can choose (can even be after the time/length filter).

Hmm, nothing at all.
Do you have "log debug messages" enabled in preferences?
Well, we can do it hard way... :)
Please do a test dump ( http://www.makemkv.com/onlinehelp/testdump.html ) for the title that has this issue . This should certainly provide all necessary data.

I suggest you make a complete disc backup. This is my normal method for all discs these days to more easily determine (using vlc) the correct audio and subtitle tracks along with chapter names (if given in the discs menus) for a title and is also much easier with TV series and quicker to redo if you make a mistake.

With vlc choose Open Directory at the discs BDMV directory for blurays. Play titles through the menu and test switching through the audio and subtitle tracks. Their orders should correspond between vlc and makemkv (except remember forced only subtitles in makemkv are just the, er, forced subtitles in that same track).
Then in makemkv choose Open Files at the discs BDMV/index.bdmv file to rip as normal from the backup.

I apologize for the extremely late response, I had gotten an indication from Mike that the problem was a genuine bug and would be addressed.
I only just this week tried again to find the problem still there. I came back to this thread and saw your suggestion and tried it, it worked !
Thank you!
