Hello.
I prefer using Windows Media Player (probably a bad idea to most of you) I use the CCCP codec pack and have never had an MKV that wouldn't play. None of the files I am making with MAKEMKV are working in Windows Media Player. I downloaded VLC and they worked instantly. I don't like VLC. I'm looking for suggestions on getting Windows Media Player to work.
(correction) Windows Media Player did work the first few times, then it stopped working completely.

Perform a "System Restore" back to the last time things were working properly...

Could be many thing... perhaps you uninstall something required by mistake.. like FFDShow or Haali.
You could uninstall CCCP.
Remove Configuration during uninstall.
And install the lastest version.
Don't forget to active Haali (should be active by default).
Could require to restart for make haali works properly.
