DoVi MKVs, determine why some work and some don't.

Post by Vica153 »

3 different DoVi 8.1 MKV videos, one plays at DoVi, one falls back to HDR10+, on falls back to simple HDR.

How do I figure out what is different about the MKVs?

My Roku TV is picky about DoVi. Seems like they assumed it would all be profile 5. It supports HDR10+ also.

If I play via my Firecube with coreELEC, then they all play DoVi fine. Playing via the Plex app in the TV, I had assumed all 3 would fall back to HDR, but got 3 different results. Trying to figure out why.

The generic info on the MKVs is all the same, but there is obviously something different between the 3 files.

I never realized how complicated video encoding was. I'm quite the noob in this area still.

Just realized that the video where Dolby Vision successfully played via the Roku Plex app is actually an MP4 and not an MKV. Still leaves one MKV that plays at HDR10+ and one that plays at simple HDR. Ideally all of my DoVi MKVs would successfully fallback to HDR10+.
