Just got an HDR display (1000 nits) and some 4k blue-rays to play around with. And I've discovered that Make MKV is somehow messing up the brightness.
I've ruled out other potential causes. My media player (MPC-BE madVR) plays other HDR test footage just fine. I've tested other media players and had the same result, I've messed with every win10 setting you can mess. And playing the disks via my actual UHD player gets the correct brightness as well. It's only when i play an HDR movie that I have ripped with MakeMKV that the brightness is wrong.
The difference isn't insignificant. All other forms of HDR (same scene same movie, just from different source) seem to be around 2-4x as bright as what my MakeMKV rips are.
So far this has been the case with every HDR disk I've ripped. (Alita, Deadpool 1,2, Batman vs Superman, The lord of the rings)
HDR content when ripped with Make MKV is very dim

make sure your madvr is not tonemapping and passing through the hdr also what gpu do you have?

GPU is an AMD Radeon 6800xt. I've checked to make sure it's outputting an HDR 12 bit signal at the TVs native chroma sampling. (YCbCr444)Billycar11 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 2:18 ammake sure your madvr is not tonemapping and passing through the hdr also what gpu do you have?
I played around with the Mad VR HDR settings. Including pass through as well as manually controlling my nits target in HDR by pixel shader.
Neither option brought back my brightness. Pass through reduced average brightness by ~20% according to MPCs data readout
I'll note, running other HDR content via MadVR works just fine. For example test footage I've downloaded from 4kmedia runs as bright as it should. In Alita battle angel for example I'm getting around 120nits average with a maximum of around 230 nits. Sonys Swordsmith demo averages 990 nits, though it won't report peak. This is in HDR pass-through mode. In pixel shader mode (1000 nits target) the result is similar.

Same result unfortunately.
I'm just gonna give up on HDR ripping and use my dedicated drive for it. Not as convenient as solid state but it's fine.

you have something messed up in mpc or your output settings then as it works fine for me hdr is perfectly preserved.
try the jriver free trial with hdr pass through but dont change any setting as that one is setup to just kinda work as is

Re: HDR content when ripped with Make MKV is very dim
If you are tone mapping with madVR you should uncheck “passthrough hdr” or “send hdr signal”. You want to send only sdr with dci p3 or bt2020 color space since madVR is handling the hdr
If madVR sends an hdr flag your tv will then handle it instead and there won’t be proper tone mapping.
This is my understanding and I haven’t had any brightness issues ripping mkvs with these settings
