MakeMKV's pristine UHD BD rips & their playback compatibility on (un)common devices

Post by planet1 »

If there is a need for a quick overview of devices capable of handling the playback of MakeMKV's UHD BD Rips, this is an attempt to create one:

  • Code: Select all

Fabricator	Model Device type	FW / OS-Version SW / App	SW-Version video playback	HDR handling	24p video mode	audio: TrueHD	DTS-HD MA	AC3	dts subtitles	submitter

LG 65SJ8509	television set	05.80.35 - - OK OK ? FAIL	OK OK	OK ?

Sony UBP-X800M2	disc player	M45.R.0050 - - OK OK YES, 24p OK	OK OK	OK FAIL
    Sony UBP-X700	disc player	M43.R.0277 - - OK OK YES, 24p FAIL	OK OK	OK ? RESET_9999
Panasonic	DMP-UB314	disc player	1.82 - - OK OK NO, 60p FAIL	FAIL OK	OK FAIL

Microsoft	Xbox One S	game console	10.0.17763.4088 Film & TV	10.19021.1041.70	OK OK NO, 60p FAIL	FAIL OK	FAIL OK
Microsoft	Xbox One S	game console	10.0.17763.4088 VLC 3.1.0.70 FAIL - - OK	FAIL OK	OK FAIL

Dune HD Pro 4K set-top box	Android 7.01 ? ? OK OK YES, 24p OK	OK OK	OK spl147
NVIDIA Shield (TV/Pro)	set-top box	Android 8.x Kodi 18.1 OK OK YES, 24p OK	OK OK	OK ? spl147
MINIX NEO U9-H	set-top box	Android 7.1.1 Kodi 18.1 OK OK YES, 24p OK	OK OK	OK ? Grencola

Additional categories like subtitle support or chapter recognition could be added.
Looking forward to add all sort of devices like smartphones and tablets with MHL, SlimPort or USB-C [alternate modes] support.

One last thing: let's just leave PCs out of it, at least for now or until the Playstation (Pro) catches up ;-).

Why are we leaving PC's out of the discussion ? The list for an HTPC is pretty short:

HTPC: Does everything ? A: Yes

:D

As far as MKV playback that is. It's kind of funny that PC's have falled off the grid when it comes to streaming. It's really a platform that COULD do everything (streaming wise) if only the streaming services/Windows would give it some love. Because it lacks in the streaming area I have a Roku Ultra (4K) for all the other stuff.

Because the variations are sheer endless: starting with the correct GPU, the os, the os patch level, the driver, the optimal driver settings, the playback software, the sw accelerated mode, the signal connection (HDMI, DP), the monitor etc.

Let's focus on uniformed environments, on which people can easily reproduce the playback capability.

MY bets are on Raspberry Pi 5 or 6 with a full 4K HEVC HDR decoding capability (hopefully) .

Last but not least, where are the smartphone nerds? A fairly recent Snapdragon, Android 8.x and a USB-C to HDMI adapter cable should do the job.
