error trying to use makMKV on a dvdFAB disc
Re: error trying to use makMKV on a dvdFAB disc
What's even a "dvdFAB disc"? You mean like a DVD (you) burnt with decrypted content obtained with some dvdfab software? (In that case the chance that the disc is dead may be significantly higher, especially if it was burnt long time ago.)
Either way, what exactly are the errors?

Re: error trying to use makMKV on a dvdFAB disc
i thought it was maybe a common enuf error message that someone would no.
i'll have to recreate it,,,sorry,
but the dvd set is an sgt bilko series boxed complete set that i bought from amazon. normally no probs but a particular disc generated this message and makmkv encountered problems and could not compete the job.
it's the only disc of the 20 that generated this message
"it appears you are opening the disc processed by dvdfab/macthe ripper which is known to produce damaged vob files please use original disc instead" - this message is generated when makemkv initially quick scans the dvd

Re: error trying to use makMKV on a dvdFAB disc
Well I have no idea if MakeMKV could give false alarms in some cases but obviously you can't rule out that the disc is simply "broken" (due to "manufacturing error"), and that's what MakeMKV is telling you.which is known to produce damaged vob files
And according to what you have mentioned (2 were completed and the other 6 were not), it doesn't sound to me that MakeMKV is "forbidding" you from backing up / remuxing its content, rather it appears that it just couldn't because the files are "damaged".
Doesn't mean that you cannot try remuxing it mkvtoolnix or ffmpeg though. (Not sure if the disc is encrypted in that case. If so you'll need to make decrypted backup first -- with either makemkv or libdvdcss frontends, such as dvdbackup.)

i retried and got different results. the first time makemkv gave me 4 of the 8 episodes, the second time i salvaged 5. i'll try mkvtoolnix and ffmpegtomty89 wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2026 1:29 pmWell I have no idea if MakeMKV could give false alarms in some cases but obviously you can't rule out that the disc is simply "broken" (due to "manufacturing error"), and that's what MakeMKV is telling you.which is known to produce damaged vob files

Re: error trying to use makMKV on a dvdFAB disc
Well in that case maybe the "dvdfab heads-up" is somewhat a "red herring" and really just means that the disc is in poor state / of poor quality, in which case you might want to make an (encrypted) image of the disc with e.g. ddrescue before decrypting and/or remuxing the content from the image.
Note that if the disc is encrypted (as usual), with at least some drives you might need to open the disc with a libdvdcss frontend (such as VLC) once before you can "raw read" / ddrescue it. (Maybe opening it once with MakeMKV would do as well. Don't really remember.)
