How to find differences in MKV files?

Post by KineKilla »

I apologize for the NOOB question but I am trying to figure out why some MKV files will play fine on my TV (Jellyfin Native Client App, Google TV Bravia 8II) and others just give me a black screen.

I have found that BTTF in 4k w/ Dolby Vision absolutely refuses to play. However all my other MKV files with Dolby Vision play just fine. I pulled them into MakeMKV and can't actually see any differences in the DV Profile, etc.

Any program that can be used to more thoroughly go through these to identify similarities or differences?

Here is what Make MKV show for each file. They look identical to me.

I like MediaInfo for learning details about .mkv files.

ffprobe is part of ffmpeg and can show a lot of details about a file as well.

According to the screenshots, BttF3 has a full enhancement layer (FEL) while The Hobbit only has a minimal enhancement layer (MEL). I don't use Jellyfin, a Sony TV or any Google TV devices so I can't comment on if that matters in this case or not.
