Very slow disk backup

Post by Photozone »

Hi everyone,

I'm using the latest MakeMKV version 1.18.3 on Windows 11 25H2. My PC has two Bluray drives installed (one Asus BW 16D1Ht and one LG WH 16NS55 with firmware 16NS60). I also have an LG WH 16NS40 with firmware 16NS60 connected via USB.

Recently, I tried to back up three Blu-ray discs simultaneously, as I've done successfully many times before. In this case, two were UHD and one was a standard Blu-ray.

Unfortunately, I found that the backup process took much longer than I've ever experienced before. Each disc took about 1.5 to 2 hours, simultaneously, but incredibly slowly. What was particularly noticeable was that each drive would be reading from the discs and then suddenly stop. After several seconds, it would start reading again, stop, and so on, until the discs were finished.

Has anyone else ever experienced this phenomenon :?:

Since many people have read the post, but apparently no one has an answer, I think I've found it myself.

Data is being stored over the network on an Unraid server. Because it started experiencing slight lag, I tested the hard drive it was writing to. Lo and behold, the speed test showed 5-50 MB/s (Seagate Barracuda 8 TB).

Since I have a spare drive at home, I swapped the HDD and started a parity restoration. What can I say? About 10 minutes after starting the parity synchronization, the parity drive (Seagate Exos 8 TB) suddenly shut down and just started throwing error messages. What a load of crap.

No spare drive available. I shut down the server. I removed the "slow Barracuda" and backed it up to an external drive via USB.

Since I have a spare drive at home, I swapped the HDD and started a parity restoration. I bought replacement drives (this time WD RED Pro), installed them, started the array, and lo and behold, suddenly two HDDs have the wrong file system. However, they can be read externally in Windows without any problems as XFS, just like the other drives.

Long story short: for the past few days, I've been copying the "unreadable" HDDs to external drives, adding them back to the array, formatting them, and then transferring the backed-up data back to the array.

I think this has solved the problem of the extremely slow MKV backups, and I've realized I must have way too much free time to waste so much time on this nonsense.

I estimate another 12-15 hours, and everything should be back to normal.

Best regards

Personally I use Spinrite to exercise and verify a HDD before I use it in my NAS. I typically do a level 5 scan on a new disk and it takes several days to complete. This has a way of weeding out troubled disks before they're pressed into service in my NAS.
