4k discs and MakeMKV Win32/Win64/Lin64

Post by Danno »

Hey all, been ripping DVDs, blu rays, laserdiscs, and VHS tapes for years, decided it was time to figure out 4k UHD discs. After wrapping my head around how to get the Libredrive firmware updates on my optical drives, I am finally pulling 4k discs down to the hard drive, am quite impressed with MakeMKV.

Blu rays have generally been straight forward in 32-bit Win7, it was usually simply a matter of sticking the disc in the drive and letting MakeMKV do the magic, and this is still the case using 64-bit Windows10. I am finding that 64-bit Win10 is the only way I am able to get any success with 4k video, though. The same disc in 32-bit Win7, 64-bit Linux, and 32-bit WinXP all fail. Each separate machine is connected to the net to acquire the hash keys, but only 64-bit Win10 can actually decrypt the discs. Is there some limitation on 32 bits and 4k decryption?

My preference is to use Linux whenever possible, but my experience with MakeMV in Linux has been quite brief, have taken a handful of pokes at it. I installed a recent 64-bit distro, compiled and fired up MakeMKV. It cannot scan & find any optical drives, but if I insert a disc & mount it, I can use "Open Files" and navigate to the "index" file on the disc, open it up, and MakeMKV will start its process. Ultimately it fails to open on both 4k and blu ray discs, saying that there are no hash keys. These discs will open in 64Win10.

Am happy to have a machine that pulls them down, I guess this is just feedback regarding the other releases of MakeMKV that seem to provide inconsistent results. Thanks for the excellent work.

It should work on 32 bit windows not sure why it's not.

For the Linux one I have an idea what's going on it's probably because you have it in a docker and the docker does not allow full access to the drive

Appreciate the response, thanks. The installed distro is Slackware-current from a few months ago. I don't believe "docker" is distributed with that distro. Unless you are talking about something else. I am not familiar with the term, so my brief web search indicates it's software that has to be installed after the fact. I wondered if the CPU, a Core i7 920, might be lacking some instruction set necessary for UHD decoding? It seemed unlikely that decryption would be hardware-dependent, but this is a new world for me.

Show us the exact error in makemkv on Linux with a UHD disc.

Here's the feedback from MakeMKV when I try to open a 4k disc that works fine in Win10-64. MakeMKV cannot find any of the optical drives, but I can open the "index" and it starts its run:

MakeMKV v1.16.5 linux(x64-release) started
The program can't find any usable optical drives.
Opening files on harddrive at /run/media/Username/MOVIE_NAME
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
Saved AACS dump file as /home/Username/.MakeMKV/MKB20_v72_Movie_Name_9B9F.tgz
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc

Get the same thing with blu rays as well.

Does MakeMKV have a preferred Linux distro it is developed against, Ubuntu or something? I can dual boot, or maybe virtualize, any distro, for the occasional need to pull down a disc.
