Time Machine and MakeMKV

My main machine is a first generation Mac Pro — model 1,1 — with at least two extra internal drives.
A 1 TB one that I store media files on, and a 640 gigabyte one that I use as backup: I’ve a 250 gigabyte main drive, so the 640 drive is usually big enough.
However, using MakeMKV to rip blu-rays seems to cause problems.
My back up drive RAPIDLY fills up: to the point where (usually) I have to blank my backup drive, and set up Time Machine all over again.
RIGHT at the moment … ? Time Machine is telling me it can’t back up to the given drive: as it needs 860 gigabytes to do so.
What I suspect is happening?
Is that the various temporary files MakeMKV generates on my system AREN’T getting cleaned out properly.
Is that the case? If so, how do I find them: and then trash them?
If it’s NOT the case, what’s ACTUALLY happening: and how do I remedy this?
