www.makemkv.com

Updated to OS 10.10.3 and MakeMKV 1.9.2 last week. After the update, MakeMKV hasn't been working anymore.
I tried to rip a new Blu Ray disc and some old ones that work perfectly from before, and none of them were able to be ripped.
Kept getting Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - AUTHENTICATION FAILURE' occurred while issuing SCSI command from every rip I had tried on both new and old Blu Ray discs.

My system:
iMac (27 inch, late 2012) running OS X version 10.10.3
with a LaCie Blu Ray external drive running USB 2.0.

Can anyone help? I've been searching possible solutions throughout the forum and the net, and nothing help. I tried to reset my computer, unplug my external drive, downgrade to lower version of MakeMKV, even tried switching different external Blu Ray drive and different Macs...tried it on a PC running Window 7......etc. Nothing help. Same error repeating again and again.

Ran out of ideas by this point. Any suggestions is high appreciated.

OS X and Linux can both get into modes where they won't allow MakeMKV talk to the hardware to exchange keys, but Windows is usually immune to that, if you're running it with administrator access. The fact that the drive doesn't accept older disks now is a symptom of AACS updating the firmware to revoke MakeMKV's keys... but that would normally mean you'd inserted a disk with an unsupported AACS version (53 or higher) at some point... and MakeMKV is reporting the "highest encountered" as v52.

Versions of MakeMKV prior to 1.9.2 won't be able to work with that drive now, but 1.9.2 should be able to decode that disk.

I'd recommend sending the file /Users/vincent/.MakeMKV/MKB_v52_THE_TAKING_OF_TIGER_MOUNTAIN.tgz to svq@makemkv.com (or a link to where Mike can download it, if your mail system won't handle that size file). It should give him more information to help you.

I'm working on the assumption that DVDs still work with the drive, because AACS wouldn't affect them. I've also not read many (any?) cases where OS X got in the way of reading them.

If that is NOT the case, you might want to clean the drive. But dirty drives usually return a different set of error messages than you're seeing.

DVD works fine. No problem whatsoever.
I tried to rip the same blu ray and some old ones today and still came up empty.
When I tried to rip the same blu ray, I noticed that "Protection" line said AACS v52, while the drive information said the drive is up to v54. Does that mean anything to you?
I did try to clean the drive and also clean the disc in question. Hell, I even try to rip the same disc using another blu ray drive (ASUS) and still came up with nothing.
I am still waiting for Mike to get back to me. Hopefully, he would have some answer. Another update on MakeMKV maybe?

If the drive has seen v54, it would be best to find the disk that caused that. Mike needs information from such disks to generate the updates that combat AACS. And, unfortunately, it looks like either v53 or 54 revoke the current key MakeMKV uses. My system records that v53 was found on the Familiar of Zero season 3 disk, and everything still works here, so I'm guessing it is v54.

I found the disc that has the v54 and am in the process of ripping it and sending the info to Mike. Hopefully, he could do magic with the extra info and fix this problem.
Just a thought....if I have a new external drive and insert a disc with lower than v54, would the MakeMKV works again?

The crazy thing is, the disc is for a local movie (Hong Kong). Usually, they don't have that kind of AACS protection....at least this is the first time I came across with.

That's true...very expensive indeed.
I sent v54 AACS to Mike already. Hope he could use the info to battle the AACS and make update on MakeMKV.

Guys, when you submit a new disc information, what does it contain? Does it contain any drive information? Is it possible that my drive will be banned if I send the disc information to Mike?

Banned? Why would it be banned?
You are just basically sending info to Mike about the info of your drive and the disc that it tries to read. That shouldn't get your drive banned.

Guys, I just tried using a brand new Blu Ray drive (read only) (ASUS SBC-06D2X-U D201) to rip a blu ray disc (Movie: The Taking of Tiger Mountain) with AACS version 52 via MakeMKV 1.9.2. I am using Mac OS X 10.10.3 and it works.
The rip is successful.
So, I can confirm that MakeMKV 1.9.2 can read up to AACS v 52.
I don't have a disc with AACS v 53, but I do have a disc with v 54 and MakeMKV can't handle v 54.
Woodstock confirmed that the currect MakeMKV works with v 53.
So, it seems like v 54 is the one that breaks MakeMKV.

Also, if your drive read disc with AACS v 54, it's done for. It will no longer work even if you insert disc with older AACS version (discs that could be ripped successfully before), at least until Mike update MakeMKV that could combat v 54.

The problem is, LOADING a disk with a version of AACS that blockes MakeMKV (and v54 seems to be one of those) changes the firmware in the drive; you don't even have to try ripping it! And, once the firmware is changed, it refuses to read any BDs using a locked-out key.

Yup and I learnt it the hard way. Went out to buy a new drive just for the sake to prove the theory of using a brand new drive to rip disc with AACS version lower than 54. Fortunately, the drive itself was too expensive. And more fortunately, I was able to read and rip most of the disc with AACS version 54 below. v 54 is the one that breaks the MakeMKV.

Mike just replied me and he said he's fully aware of the issue and has been working on the problem. A new release of MakeMKV should be available sometime next week. Hopefully, by then, the problem will be solved.
