MKV 1.9.1 Optical Drive handling bizarre & locking up

OS X 10.7.5 two optical drives.
1 - Run MKV, load disk- seems to see all the right stuff on drive but "File->Open Drive" has drive greyed out. Quit & relaunch - drive is available.
2 - after rip, eject & load new disc: Information seems to recognize the disc and show its data but again "File->Open Drive" has the drive greyed out. Quit & relaunch - drive is available.
Happens every time.Must mount the disc when MKV is not running.

Also I have run into a sequence (exactly what??) where neither MKV nor Finder will open the drive. The system must be rebooted! I have to follow the above sequence or else!

Log shows nothing:

Open disk will be greyed out unless the operating system reports a disk has been loaded into one of the optical drives. The most likely reason it stays greyed out is that OS X hasn't detected it being inserted.

Restarting MakeMKV will force it to repeat it's query for optical drives and their status, which is probably why it works for another disk, but the root cause is how the operating system is managing the disks.

Note: while trying to document this better, I have had to force power-off the system multiple times to unlock or regain control of the optical drive. Most cases have been a failure of the “Eject” to work and once a hung scan operation. ??Long idle times before ejecting??

I can see the disc in Finder at all times. I have screen shots but cannot attach.

Case #1 - can not reproduce. I’ll repost if it happens and can reliably repeat later.

Case #2 - I created this by running MKV, open drive via keyboard, insert disc, close drive via keyboard, wait for MKV to sense disc and post info, “Open Disc” … “Make MKV” -success. Eject with the MKV "Eject", mount new disc via keyboard - “Open Disc” all drives greyed out. Again same lack of disc recognition. However, "Quit", rerun - all is well.
I believe MKV is only sensing the disc during startup code and not in the main loop.
***Edit: added screen shots for #2
***Edit: uploaded but where are they??

Also: I do believe there is a problem with the menu bar control. After clicking on "File", mouse down to "Open Drive", back to "File" and click:then mouse over menu items other than MKV ones - they open!
