External BD-drive recommendations

A friend of mine is using a Pioneer 208 in his Tower and is more than happy.
I'm only using a mobile Mac (Macbook Pro End 2013 with no optical drive at all)
So I have 2 options:
- external USB BD drive
- putting a Pioneer 209 (that's the only one which is currently available) in a chassis and connect via Thunderbolt or FireWire or USB
Local electronic store said the he tried half a dozen slim BD USB drives on Mac and always had problems with it.
Are there any BD-drive recommendations ?
Thanks,
DJBobo

External drives always run the risk of being under powered if they rely solely on the USB port. They will work fine for watching video, but the speeds that MakeMKV can spin them up to draw too much power for a single USB port to feed.
That makes the "safe bet" an external enclosure that has its own power supply.
There have been many reports here of people successfully using LG and Samsung USB slim drives on Macs, once the power issue is addressed. Dual-head cables (take power from 2 USB ports) or external power does the trick.

This is the recommendation I went with a couple of months ago and have been super satisfied. I have ripped about 70 Blu-Ray disks with it and it's working just fine so far with both MakeMKV and OS X 10.10. I am able to rip an entire disk in about 40 mins using a 2012 Core i5 MacBook Air.

It's definitely not cheap, and may be overkill since I don't use it for burning disks at all, but it has worked consistently better than the other drives on the market like -

Hi,
Are you saying you got the samsung and the buffalo drives or just the one?
Ive been looking at the samsung drive for ripping, it seems to do the trick without going for an enclosure deal.

Chris

I just have the Buffalo drive. 15 more rips, i.e. a total of 85 and still going strong.

Ah, ok thats cool.
Ive been looking for a good strong player and was looking at the samsung.
I have a 13 inch macbook pro retina 2013 with 8gb ram and a 1TB hard drive. I am starting to look at ripping my entire collection of some 100+ movies and was wondering what would be a good option to use
Regards

First of all I would like to thank you for the recommendations.
I nearly bought the one of the Samsung drives but then I decided to spend 15 bugs more and purchased the Buffalo drive.
This drive is amazing, it's fast, it's quiet, I could read 20 of 20 BluRay Disks without a problem.
With the 2 cables and the additional power supply connected I don't have to worry about the power consumption.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 2013 with 10.10.2.
