I am having an issue when converting the file. I am just starting to digitally back up my dvd and blu ray library so I am very new to this. I have done a few blu rays that have worked great and a few that have not. None of my DVDs seem to be converting with great quality. I am first converting the disk to MKV with this program and then using iskysoft media converter to convert to m4v so it reads correctly with itunes and then I can stream using apple tv.

I am loading in the disc, selecting the major title and audio and deselecting all foreign audio and all soundtracks and then simply hitting the Make MKV button.

The problem I am encountering is that the video from the MKV file playback is choppy. It is only happening on some titles and seems to be hit or miss on new vs old movies. Is there anything I can do to help fix this problem or is there another way I should be doing this to optimize my output quality?

I am very new to this and do not have much experience doing this and it is starting to get frustrating since it seems to be hit or miss on the conversions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The MKV file should be the exact quality of the source, be it DVD or BD, since MakeMKV doesn't modify the data found... It just repackages it. The loss of quality is in the conversion to MP4, and that will most likely be because of the choices your software uses to be "iTunes compatible".

Go to handbrake.fr and pick up Handbrake. It has profiles for various "targets", including Apple TV. Since you mentioned working with Bluray, you will want to get one of the "Nightly Builds", after you try the release version to get your bearings with the software. The NBs are more optimized in their settings, and have better support for Bluray, particularly in the area of subtitles.

For what it is worth, I rip everything to MKV files, the process them through Handbrake to optimize them for different devices. The video server gets the highest definition the source supports, but I'll also compress most titles for my tablet, iPhone, and projector, as well.

FWIW, we have a release preview out (see the front page and/or the forums), which features Blu-ray PGS support. Unless a major issue is found, it'll become 0.9.9 within weeks.

I am looking at the MKV before conversion and that is where the issue seems to be. With a Blu Ray it is now working every time. The problem is when I am converting a DVD. The MKV file from a DVD is choppy on the playback so when I convert it, the conversion is then choppy. Is there something special I need to do in order to make this work with a DVD that will help the quality?
