Should it take this long?

Post by mkvSurferDude »

I have a very large video, 91GB, and I’m striping out the non-English audio. It’s running on a 8 core Intel CPU (macOS 14) although it appears to be using only a single core. Both the source and the destination are located on a fast SSD.

So far it has been running almost 17 hours with an estimated 7.5 hours remaining (I’ve used tooks like Mp4Tools to leave out audio channels and the duration is measured in minutes).

Not a big deal, just curious if taking 25 hours is normal, even for a 91GB file.

What program are you running? MakeMKV would extract the video from the disk at the same speed whether you are including specific tracks or not.

If you're simply copying it from one spot to the next, mkvtoolnix has tools that will do it in moments.

Thx for the reply. I'm running MakeMKV on an existing .mkv video file (not from an optical disk). I've done that way before to exclude tracks I don't need, although on much smaller videos, and it was faster.

Thanks for the suggestion. I used MKVTools and it ran in under 2 minutes (while dropping the 5 alt language audio channels)
