Does anyone have an issue with Mac OS 12.0.1 and MakeMKV 1.15.2? I tried to rip a Blu-Ray I just got (from 2016, Victor, Victoria) and failed:
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - AUTHENTICATION FAILURE' occurred while issuing SCSI command A30..00200740100720..0F6989216E5D43BDEB794E284156CCBA917 to device 'IoKit:/IOBDServices/58B1D920'

Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
Saved AACS dump file as /Users/wayned1/Library/MakeMKV/MKB_v61_MOD_Victor_Victoria_888574407728_BD50CMF_7000073117_2_5C24.tgz
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted

I don't have a clue on what to do with a tgz file

I tried a movie I had already ripped (Ten Little Indians) and it also failed with the same message. I then tried a non BluRay movie with MacX DVD and was successful so the drive is okay (I think). Is there any advice to try.

The most recent version of MakeMKV is 1.16.5, released at the beginning of the month. Mac OS Monterey support landed in 1.16.4 from July. The first thing to try is updating to the latest version of MakeMKV.

Before I posted the first reply I actually checked the version and didn't see anything mentioned about Monterey, I should've still installed the new release. Thank you

Same here, cannot rip anything now. All copyright protection errors. Sadly, frustrating. Anyone have a work around or know a timeline for a new version of MakeMKV that will resolve this issue.

https://www.makemkv.com/download/ <-- It is fairly easy to see the release notes for the last few versions on that page. There's this bullet point on the 1.16.4 release:

Mac OS: Support for Mac OS 12.0 Monterey

Are you running a version of MakeMKV with Monterey support?

Personally, I have not installed it yet… I'm still running Big Sur. I wonder if there's some new permission needed in the Security & Privacy tab in System Preferences? Or if the install of Monterey unhelpfully reset whatever permissions you had previously granted MakeMKV?

When I checked the release notes, I saw items that included bug fixes and UI changes, I don't recall Monterey changes - but I missed it, I still should've updated the s/w. So I did that and after I tried to rip again, I get the following error:
- - - - - - - -
MakeMKV v1.16.5 darwin(x64-release) started

I could open the directory and use VLC to see what was there, I saw the opening items (the piracy warning, etc.)

I should've said that while I had some stuff, I didn't have the movie.<sigh>

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00000.m2ts' at offset '10862131200'
That's the 'classic' drive-having-trouble-reading-the-disc error, often because the disc is dirty. As frustrating as it is, it is progress. :)

If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!

I checked the disc and it looks clean, wipe it anyway on my shirt and it still looks shiny. I bought it from Amazon as new. I think I had the same kind of errors on a two movie set of Stripes/Ground hog day - both movies had errors doing ripping, but since I had bought the BluRay set at a pawn shop I just chalked it up to "a lessons learned" experience. I don't know what to think now.

"New in package" is no guarantee of "clean and readable", because the packaging itself has chemicals that cloud the disks enough to cause read issues. The longer they spend sealed up, the worse the situation becomes.

As I've pointed out in the linked topic, our eyes do not necessarily see it, and I've yet to get a good picture of it because phone cameras don't like to focus on mirror-like surfaces.

That's all true but is there someway to judge how much invisible crap is on the disc beyond the failure of the player mechanism to read the disc? I would think that the packaging chemicals would be limited since I have at least several dozen BluRay discs that were successfully ripped. Is the packaging chemicals a lot different between BluRay and SD DVD's? I'm asking in my ignorance.

You can try cleaning the disk. I usually don't unless the disk gives errors, but I have taken a damp cloth and wiped a PART of a disk (radially, hub to outside) and seen a difference between the just-cleaned part and the rest of the disk, even when the disk looks "perfect".

I'll try that and report back

Still failed, I actually wiped it twice, I used a damp paper cloth. The first time was a cross between radial and rotational, the second was a radial motion.<arrrgh>
