Trying to rip in 1080

I am using a Mac running Sierra and when I try to rip 1080p dvd's, for conversion into handbrake, they keep coming out in 720p. What am I doing wrong? 
DVD is 720x480.
Bluray is up to 1920x1080.
If you're ripping a DVD, you're not going to get 1080 resolution, because it would not be a DVD.
