Slow rip speed using Pioneer BDR-205

Hi,
I've installed a Pioneer BDR-205 (x12 writer, x8 reader) in my Mac Pro (2008, Harpertown) using the onboard SATA bus. When I transfer files from a BluRay using drag and drop the transfer rate is at 40 MB/sec or more but when I rip using MakeMKV the read rate is stuck at around 8 MB/s and it takes forever to rip. Anyone knows how to resolve this? Btw, CPU utilisation is at 5% so it shouldn't be the load that slows things down.
Thanks
