Mac OS Sierra broke functionality?

Post by user333 » Wed Sep 21, 2016 11:40 pm

Hi there,

I noticed that upon the new update / upgrade to Sierra, my blu-rays are no longer archiving correctly; they are failing with errors. To double-check this, I popped in a blu-ray of mine I had archived just last week (that worked flawlessly), and it failed.
Upon the error, I installed the newest version of MakeMkv, and also the newest "directaspi" driver (or whatever it is) to ensure I was up to date -- same issues.

Anyway, either it's an OS problem, or my drive has suddenly gone bad.
Any suggestions are appreciated -- and thank you!

Here's the info from my last attempted disc, on my Blade Runner: The Final Cut blu-ray -- which did go flawlessly just mere days ago:

MakeMKV v1.10.2 darwin(x86-release) started

Mike will have to decode the debug codes, so we'll have to wait for him. You might want to pack up the files requested in the FAQ in my signature and send them to support@makemkv.com to push the process forward a bit.

Sierra isn't "supposed" to break things like this, but when has Apple missed an opportunity to mess with people? :)

Haha, that last line made me chuckle aloud...they definitely seem to 'break' things more regularly in their updates than Microsoft. ;)
I will look at your FAQ now and submit the material -- thank you!

Is anyone else having problems on Sierra?
Have held off from upgrading so far and don't want to break MakeMKV functionality

So as a follow-up to the issue I have been having in Sierra, I tried my PC from the other room and used the same external blu-ray drive -- and it worked flawlessly. From this, I now know it is not the drive itself -- it is the Sierra OS. I am not sure if this will happen with everyone, but it most certainly IS happening on both of my macs (macbook pro and macbook air) that I've updated.

As another interesting point, some of my external drives that I plug into my macs NEVER stop reading, even when not in use. This use to be attributed to a flaw in Spotlight when reading exFAT drives in El Capitan, but could be fixed by excluding the external drive from Spotlight. Now it seems that this persistent reading of the drive cannot be stopped, which has been burning out my drive & slowing data transfers to a crawl.

So, as a solution for now...I would hold off on Sierra. I am going to attempt to use a Time Machine restore on my Macbook Pro, and keep Sierra on my Air -- I am 'assuming' that Apple will fix these issues with time, and then once it works on the Air, I will update the other as well.

Hope this helps some of you out, whether in diagnosing or deciding on upgrading!

Thanks for the update
It might be worthwhile feeding that back to Apple as a bug

I made the leap and upgraded and have noticed no issues so far. Perhaps it's more about individual set-up rather than a problem with Sierra

I don't know whether to upgrade or not. Can the developer please comment as to whether the newest version of your software works with OS X Sierra? Thank you.

I am waiting on confirmation on this as well...I rolled back to the previous OS in the meantime (I'm the OP of this thread).

I'm running into the same problem but the software usually manages to work through it.
I'm having a particular problem with RED 2 where it simply stops at a certain point.

Ah, RED 2, a problem disk! Load up VLC and open the disk in VLC (like you're going to play the DVD). Pause it.

Then start MakeMKV, and you should see things go well. I had received odd messages about re-flashing my DVD drive with stuff from tbd.rmc1.org, which I can't do very well. I'd seen an answer in a post elsewhere that VLC knows how to "open" a DVD -- unlock the hardware, as it were -- and then other code can access the disk. It has worked very nicely for me, at least.
