Problems with Handbrake after MakeMKV

Post by zerostar39 » Fri Apr 02, 2010 1:35 am

So far I have not been successful. I have tried on about 5 different blu rays. I can use MakeMKV and get a .mkv file, plays wonderful with VLC. I then use handbrake to convert it for iTunes. Takes a good 8-10 hours. I've tried many different settings. Even when I preview it in handbrake it looks and sounds fantastic. but then after its done, I can't open the file in iTunes or Quicktime. I have no idea what to do now. I've tried other alternatives such as MKVtools, Pavtube MKV converter, and even trying to convert it using VLC. Nothing seems to work for me.

I guess I should also mention I'm brand new at ripping blu rays, but I've been using Handbrake for a few years for DVD. any advice would be greatly appreciated

I have never really had any issues until now. I just tried ripping Sherlock Holmes Bluray with the newest version of makemkv and then using handbrake, but handbrake gets to chapter 12 and then crashes. I noticed that this movie is using AACS 15 encryption and also that a title with the same size as the main feature was excluded automatically. So I am not sure what is going on, but I think that makemkv is not doing something right on this particular movie. I have tried three other Bluray movies of mine, ripped with makemkv and handbrake with no problems today.

Does anyone know what I can do to get this one working?

What settings are you using and do you have large file size checked in the gui... if your final movie product is larger than 4gb and you didnt enable the large file option... then they wont play in either itunes or quicktime... i came across this problem with the first blu-ray i ever encoded...

I have not tried the large file size. I will give that a shot.

Just an update to my issue, I kind of had success with one movie, The Fall. I used handbrake and did one chapter at a time, ending up with 24 individual .mp4 files. I noticed at the beginning of each chapter for just a second the picture is all distorted. I dont know if that has anything to do with it. But then what I did was used the program MPEG Streamclip and it put all those individual files into one .mp4. The distortion at the beginning of each chapter is still there, but I can live with that unless I find out what Im doing wrong.

This method did not work for Tropic Thunder. Although with that movie I did end with a bunch of .mp4 files that played perfectly by themselves, once MPEG Streamclip was finished with it, the audio did not sync with the video.

I've been doing some more research on all this and I've been starting to wonder if I'm doing everything correctly with the SQV and BD+ dump. Do I need to have the keys for MakeMKV properly rip the movie?

As of today, no, generic built-in SVQ works for all BD+ titles released to date. If MakeMKV was able to open the disc and show title selection menu then decryption was successful.

ok thank you, I was getting confused as I've seen over at doom9 forum all this information about keys and stuff.

I started handbrake last night, checked it today, and it worked as far as choosing 'large file size' to convert the .mkv to .mp4. The movie I used was 40 year old virgin. Only problem is when I play it back, the audio and video aren't synced.

Hopefully final update, its all going smoothly now. I have had several successful tries with using large file size in handbrake and I am now able to enjoy my blu rays on my mac mini media center. Actually came in handy today since I got sick and stayed home from work. Watched like 4 movies in HD. awesome! thanks so much guys!

It looks like there is a problem with MakeMKV encoding the audio tracks properly. When I play the .mkv file in VLC I get an error, something like "No suitable decoder module. VLC does not support the audio or video format 'undef'. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this." However, VLC continues on playing the movie just fine! Handbrake, however, fails and stops, claiming that libhb finds 0 titles, and another scan error saying unrecognized file type. I did enable ripping of the DTS HD (uncompressed) audio track using MakeMKV. It seemed that ripping the uncompressed/lossess track would be ideal since I'll then be transcoding the movie for AppleTV, and transcoding lossy->lossy is not as good as just encoding lossless->lossy. Anyway, I'll try re-ripping without the HD audio and see if that fixes this.

Still having audio problems... AND a rip failure!

"Vicky Cristina Barcelona" ripped with the audio track labeled as "undef", so VLC won't play the .mkv file with audio - the picture is great! Handbrake will transcode this .mkv file WITH audio, but the audio is SLOOOOWED DOOOOOWN (it sounds like a 78rpm record playing at 45rpm) and totally out of sync with the picture. I believe the original BD audio format was 3 channel PCM, at some odd bitrate. I no longer have the BD. This occurred using MakeMKV v1.5.4

For "Pirate Radio", the Rip fails on the first, main feature, track after a few hundred MB. "Fatal error occured (sic), programm (sic) will now exit." I'm available for English grammar and spelling editing when this gets ready to leave beta! ;-) This occurred using BOTH MakeMKV v1.5.4 and the latest, v1.5.5.

I haven't tried Serenity again with the latest version, but it also failed the audio test. Please let me know how I can help resolve these critical errors.

VLC has trouble playing multi-channel PCM tracks in MKV. eac3to can extract and convert LPCM, but it's a windows program. mplayer plays multi-channel LPCM correctly.

Ummm... I don't think this is a PCM or multi-track problem.

I just ripped Earth: Biography Disc 1. It only has two audio tracks, and HD is defaulted unchecked, so I only ripped the one DTS 3/2+1 English track, along with the video, which is listed as Vc-1.

VLC claims that both video and audio are "undf" in the .mkv file. Oddly, it plays back the audio just fine, but there's no video.

Handbrake just refuses to recognize ANY information at all in the .mkv file and thus reports nothing to do.

I really think there is a problem with MakeMKV not properly labeling the audio tracks, and maybe the video now too. "undf" seems to me like it ought to be labeled "English" or "French" or something, but I dunno. Anyone else having this problem? I just want to be able to rip my Blu-rays to play on AppleTV. It shouldn't be this complicated.

Thanks!

Just to prove a point, I got MplayerOSX, which also refuses to play any of these .mkv files created by MakeMKV from "Earth: The Biography: Disc 1"

I guess I'll try Disc 2, but it's kinda pointless if I can't watch Disc 1 first. ;-)

Is there some way to reset all MakeMKV settings, just in case I broke something?

Thanks Mike!!

I'm going to re-try this with MakeMKV 1.5.7. I thought I had the latest version installed, but see that isn't the case. So, ignore the rest of this message, unless this is moot. I'll post again after I've tried with your latest version.

FWIW, this rip of Baraka, which looks very similar to the report on Earth Biography (video looks exactly the same) plays fine in VLC, both audio and video. The "Earth Biography" disc only has audio in VLC and Handbrake won't transcode it at all. I'm using what VLC claims is the latest update: Version 1.0.5 Goldeneye (Intel 32bit). MPlayer OS X version 2.0 (2.0b9r5) won't play any part of the Earth Biography rip.

Here's the log from the working Baraka rip:
