OS drive access mode

Post by mike admin » Thu Mar 04, 2010 8:28 am

Starting from version 1.5.0 MakeMKV supports two dirve access modes: direct mode and OS access mode. The new OS access mode has its pros and cons. Because all requests go via OS all blu-ray drives supported by OS are visible to MakeMKV and program will share access with other programs, it will not unmount the disc and mount it back when done. The read speed also should be better with this mode. Apple added blu-ray discs support in OSX 10.5 Leopard so you need to run Leopard for blu-ray disks with this mode. Tiger is still supported with old direct mode. By default new OS access mode is used only for drives inaccessible with old direct mode, you may choose to always use OS access mode in program preferences.

With new mode the program can't display many disc information items and can't determine the drive type so it calls all drives as BD-ROMs. The impact is only visual inconvinience and will be improved in future versions.

Please post your experience here, how this new mode works out for you, especially if it makes any difference for conversion speed.

I just installed a Pioneer BDR-205 in my Mac Pro running 10.6.2, and it seems to have issues with being used in OS mode:

MakeMKV v1.5.0 beta darwin(x86-release) started
Optical drive "BD-ROM MATSHITA BD-MLT SW-5582 B110" opened in OS access mode.
Optical drive "BD-ROM PIONEER BD-RW BDR-205 1.04" opened in OS access mode.
Using direct disc access mode
Evaluation version, 25 day(s) out of 30 remaining
Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occured while issuing SCSI command to device 'OS:IOBDServices:53d9dfde34af2cb1:PIONEER BD-RW BDR-205 1.04'
Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occured while issuing SCSI command to device 'OS:IOBDServices:53d9dfde34af2cb1:PIONEER BD-RW BDR-205 1.04'
...

Once I cancel the procedure, I get:

Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive

It seems to stall on /AACS/MKB_RO.inf. I tried a couple different BDs and had the same result. Direct mode does indeed still work, although I must say the read speeds are not what I was expecting. The rip maxed out at about 2.4X speed, and it's a 12X drive, so I was hoping for a bit more. When I just use rsync -av to copy the data over to a local HD, it's FAST (>25 MB/s), so I think the drive is working fine.

I also have a Matsushita SW-5582 which has not had any issues in OS mode, but it is a 2X drive, and has the rip speed to match. I had bought the new BDR-205 in hopes of getting better rip speeds. Any advice would be appreciated. Perhaps a firmware downgrade? Thanks in advance,

I can concur with jjfranzen and that is using OS access mode you can not rip any films! I also get the same messages as shown.

I am using a Samsung SH-B083 in my mac pro (2006) running 10.6.2.

Please enable "log debug messages" in preferences, restart the application and see if any DEBUG messages will be printed out.

Mike,

I have tried this again with debug logging enabled. Attached is the log.

Please download and try the latest version, 1.5.2 . Unfortunately it will likely fail in the same way, but error log will contain additional information. Please post the log from 1.5.2 here again.

My LG is doing the same thing using 1.5.2 in OS mode. It works fine in Direct Mode, albeit slow (2.4x ; It's a 6x BD drive). I enabled debugging and attached the log. It appears to keep repeating until I cancel. The LG model is being reported correctly in the log as:

BD-ROM HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GGC-H20L 1.03

Edit: Speed in Direct Mode got up to 4.1x at some points.

OS access mode is now default, and should be much faster than direct access mode. You might have to experiment with "workaround type" setting on IO tab in preferences.

I have a Samsung SH-B083L running on OS 10.6.3 which usually allows rips at 3.1-4.0X speeds, but after upgrading to the latest version (1.5.4) from 1.5.0 ripping speed is limited to 0.2X when OS access mode is enabled. After disabling it I get back my regular speeds. Anybody have any reason as to why this is happening? As well, what exactly is being done when choosing Workaround Type in the IO option?

Thanks!
