Niche problem with superwide MakeMKV window macOS 10.13

#1 Post by Smithcraft » Sat May 31, 2025 12:04 pm

Hello!

So I needed to monkey about with a disc image and I fired up MakeMKV (1.15.4).

The initial screen to select media was fine, but when I opened up the disc image, the window was now wider than the display.

I had to grab the window and move it over to get it to start, because it won't let me reduce the width of the window.

Once it was done, I quit MakeMKV and fired it back up to try and repeat the problem.

It started super wide, but it would let me resize the window.

After I opened the disc image, it went back to being super wide, and wouldn't let me reduce the width of the window.

Since I normally do my ripping on my workstation (Win10) I really don't recall ever having seen this issue.

When I tried searching for information about it, the only results I could get were about aspect ratios instead of application window sizes.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue, or if there's something I can do the next time I wanna use MakeMKV on my Mac?

edit - Just tested with 1.16 and it does the same thing. After I get up, I'll try more versions.

macOS High Sierra 10.13… talk about a blast from the past. :)

It has been a while since I've used that version of macOS, but I seem to recall on older versions of macOS, one couldn't necessarily resize a window from any arbitrary spot on the window. You might've needed to resize from one of the upper corners? Or maybe one couldn't resize from the corners?

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but I have a sense that on older macOS, window resizing used to be quirky.

You've always been able to resize a window on a Mac from the sides or corners.

It specifically will not allow me to make it narrower than more that the full width of the window, it will only let me make it wider.

Interestingly enough, since I use a dual display set up, if I run MakeMKV on the primary display (the one with the Dock), it works fine, and the window is resizeable.

It might be just that when it's run on the secondary display that it has an issue with the MakeMKV window width.

Or at least it's working in this particular instance on the primary display.

It was 10.7 when window resizing changes were introduced.

Flexible window resizing

The Mac now gains the ability to resize windows from any edge or corner, similar to features exposed over twenty years ago by Jobs' NeXTSTEP operating system, but which were removed from Mac OS X in order to preserve the look and feel of the original Mac UI.
In the end it doesn't really matter for your situation, but I feel better knowing that I wasn't hallucinating. :)

I wonder if you re-ordered your monitors if it would behave better? Your secondary display is either to the left or the right of your primary display. I wonder if it behaves any different if you move the secondary display to the other side of the primary display. (By move, I mean in your OS config, not your actual monitors.)

Only mess with this if you're curious. I wouldn't expect you to rearrange your life to accommodate an obvious MakeMKV bug, especially when there's a workaround of using it on the primary display.
