Problem ripping with 5K iMac and LG BE14NU40

Post by jjathman »

I've been using the LG BE14NU40 drive for quite a while to rip blu rays and always been very successful. This was with a couple year old Macbook Air. I recently purchased a new 5K iMac but am having a lot of problems now. Both Macs have the latest OS X version and both are using MakeMKV 1.99. Sometimes I am able to read the disc long enough to start ripping, but it always fails within a couple seconds of starting the rip. It seems like the drive is going to a low power state and then OS X thinks the drive has disappeared. Anyone else have this drive and have luck on a new iMac?

How do you have the drive plugged in?

A big problem with USB-powered devices is that they NEED to be plugged into a fully-powered USB port (sometimes TWO of them) to operate at full speed. If they aren't, they start to spin up, the port says "no more power for you!", and it resets.

It should be less of a problem if you plug into one of the USB3 ports on the iMac, because more power is available. But unpowered hubs are problematic.

It is directly plugged in to the iMac, but this blu ray drive actually comes with it's own power supply so I don't believe it would use power from the USB port, though I guess that would be possible? It really exhibits some odd behavior when I try to use it on my iMac. I've also gotten a couple kernel panics that seem to come from the com.apple.iokit.IOUSBHostFamily kernel extension. Just strange that I don't have similar problems on my Macbook Air. I'd rather not buy a new drive, but a big part of the reason for getting the iMac was to transcode movies faster!

If power isn't the issue, check LG's website to see if they have any updates to the OS X drivers.

Here's some debug output from when I encounter the problem:

I found a workaround to my issue. Apparently the cable that comes with this drive is not great quality and has problems at higher speeds. I guess my new computer could read data faster than the cable could handle. Bizarrely changes to a USB2 cable fixes the problem, although it does read slower. I think I'll buy a new super speed USB3 cable and see if I have better luck.

Here's the post that tipped me off to this workaround. http://m.apple-art.com/Will-the-LG-BE14 ... 753-4.html
