I bought an Asus USB-powered BD Drive about a month ago and it's been great so far... just plugged it in and osx recognized it right away... it's fast and quite (for an external drive), and the best part is that it uses the same type of usb cable as my portable drive... it looks and works perfectly, I highly recommend it.

List of Blu-ray drives that work
Re: List of Blu-ray drives that work
I installed a LG CH08 LS 10 in an external 5,25 box ( JJ Venus DS5 ):
- Connected in USB 2 to a Mac Mini '09 (10.5. , BD mounts but MakeMKV doesn't sees the disk and so, doesn't works. Same thing with a MB Pro '08 and 10.6.3
- But affortunaly the external box has an e-Sata connector and my MB Pro an ExpressCard slot which i connected a eSata card, and Eureka, everything works fine : average speed of BD Rip : 3x.

After some research I went for a Sony BD-5730S 6x Internal Slimline SATA Blu-Ray BD Writer plus an Akasa Slimline USB drive enclose. The combo works perfectly with both OS X 10.5 and Windows 7. The Akasa enclose has a great high quality look and feel for the price.

Both should be easily available elsewhere.

Re: List of Blu-ray drives that work
I have an LG WH10LS30 Bluray burner (SATA internal). It's working great. I have used MakeMKV for Mac to rip 6 BD's so far without issue. I'm also burning with this drive, although I've been using Windows (in VMware Fusion) to burn bluray's. It has worked great so far.

The new Plextor External 4X BD-Rom (PXB120U) for $99 (all the major sites, Amazon, NewEgg etc.) works well if a bit slow. It is USB 2.0 and is listed as a 4x speed but gave me about 2.5x-3.0 speed for most of the rip. I have seen a few rips since that would peak up to 4.0x but the average still has to be 2.5x or a bit more. It had to use the OS target mode since this is a Read Only unit. Worked like a champ, didn't need to mess around with enclosures etc.

Re: List of Blu-ray drives that work
So I bought the Asus Slimline USB drive SBC-06D1S-U after seeing some comments on this thread that it worked. Sure enough, it does work, but it's much slower than I thought it would be -- I'm hovering around 1.1x.
I copied the disk directly to my hard drive; 47 GB took about 45 minutes or so, so that works out to about 5x if I do a straight copy. I tried using MakeMKV on the files from the hard drive, but it wasn't able to decrypt them (I'd go that route, but I haven't figured out how yet).
I'm using a Mac Mini running OS 10.6.4, with a 2.0ghz Core2Duo processor.
Is anyone using this drive successfully getting faster speeds with this drive?
Thanks in advance!
FYI, My log suggests that it's using direct disc access mode:

Re: List of Blu-ray drives that work
Any of the LG blu ray drives either readers or burners work just fine with makemkv. Im currently using a CH08LS10 LG dvd burner blu ray reader on my mac pro works great.
