MakeMKV Not showing the correct Free Space

Post by psycoperl »

I am noticing that while my computer states that I have 1.4TB available on my SSD, MakeMKV is reporting that I only have 714.1G. What is going on?

This happens a lot more than people realize... Apple hides the fact that "deleting a file" doesn't free up space, because the default behaviour is to simply make the file invisible until you REALLY tell MacOS to delete it. (and it isn't just MacOS... Windows can do it, too)

We will have to rely on someone that uses MacOS a lot to explain the sequence of commands to get it to free up space from deleted files. Until you do, those files are still accessible, just hidden from you. If you actually try to USE the space, they'll be removed, quietly. But MakeMKV asks, "How much free space is there?", and gets told the truth.

Here's a post I've made on this topic before: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=139536#p139536

In my experience, trying to MakeMKV type stuff on a Mac works better using an external drive. MacOS does a lot of fancy stuff behind the scenes on a Mac's internal storage. It does a lot less of that stuff on external storage.
