Unable to backup HDDVD

When I insert an HDDVD, the backup icon is greyed out and clicking on the disc gets the following message below. When I flip over the combo disc, backup is available for the DVD version. Also BD can be backed up. I am using an LG BD/HDDVD player pulled from an LG Super Blu player and connected to a Mac Mini M1 (sequoia) with Usb 2.0 cable. Used versions 1.17.5 and 1.17.9 with same results.

Switched to an xBox drive and now making backups. I think maybe pulling the super drive out of the LG player was defeating the protection protocols. I'm finding that when a disc does not read and ejected, don't give up the first, second, or third time. Sometimes the tenth time it reads the whole disc and enables you to be able to back up. I am using iKlear Apple Polish, lint free cloth, and compressed air duster to clean discs. Unopened Italian Job was one that finally worked after multiple tries and a couple of cleanings.

UPDATE: got about half out of 90 recorded. About 25% were unreadable (after multiple tries) and most of the other 25% could decrypt extra features but not main movie. That was a kick in the you know where. The unreadable combo discs were fine on the DVD side but i chose not to record them.
