Slow Read Speed and OS Kernel Error

Post by alxscott »

Hi,

I recently removed OS X from my late 2010 Mac Mini and installed XBMCbuntu. I installed MakeMKV using the install script available on this forum, and am currently using the latest version.

Compared to running MakeMKV in OS X, the read speed has been low on all my DVD's, not reaching more than 2.1x. I cant remember exactly what speeds I used to get, but it was significatly quicker when backing up DVD's. Today I ripped a Blu-ray and enabled debugging. The following message was displayed :
Unable to open file '/BDMV/STREAM/00047.m2ts' in OS mode due to a bug in OS Kernel. This can be worked around, but read speed may be very slow.
A quick google found nothing, and I'm wondering if this is related to my slow DVD read speed? I'm running the latest XBMCbuntu which is essentially a stripped down Ubuntu 12.04 installation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as these slow read speeds are making backups quite laborious!

Alex

PS For info, with a Blu-ray I'm getting 8.0x which is the max i used to get in OS X.

I'm using XBMCbuntu as well, that message went away for me when i ran

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
It held back kernel updates, which I then had to specify manually.

I've not seen the message since.

Cheers for that mate... I've ran both commands, but dont think I've restarted yet... I'll wait for the current rip to finish, then I'll reboot and see if that helps.

Did / Do you have slow read speeds?! Might be a case of a fresh install for me...

It was floating around 2.0x, nothing drastically slow. Runs at between 3 and 6 now.

The bug would make portions of the disc to be read significantly slower - so you might not notice this at all, if most of the movie lies in a "good" area. Also, just a plain reboot fixes the issue.
