MakeMKV reading speed limited?

Below I am comparing MakeMKV with Nero Linux 4 on a typical commercial movie BD. I am using an Asus BW-12D1S-U 12X Blu-Ray drive, which is supposed to read BD-ROMs at 8x. My computer runs Ubuntu 11.10, 64bit.
Nero can create a raw image at about 18-20 MB/sec.
When decrypting the disk, MakeMKV is limited to about 9MB/sec (2X). My CPU is constantly below 15%.
When doing a full disk backup without decryption using MakeMKV, it reads at about 0.2X (yes, 0.2).
I tried the readcd command from cdrtools and it also appears to reach max 9MB/sec.
I tried MakeMKV in a Windows VMWare VM, and MakeMKV is again limited at 2X.
Any ideas why MakeMKV reads so slowly? How can Nero Linux overcome this 2X speed limit?
Thanks!
