New to MakeMKV on Fedora - Tried Everything and 1.18.2 Does Not Work

Hey Guys,

I've crawled these forums and Reddit and haven't been able to find anything that will make 1.18.2 work on Fedora KDE 42. My drive is a Plextor DVD drive and Fedora sees it just fine. MakeMKV just spins and spins and almost never finds a disc. Randomly, it will find a disc and rip it, but usually not.

I saw on the forums that rolling back to an earlier version works, but I must be the dumbest guy alive because I cannot figure out how to do that on Fedora. I've read the forum with the instructions for Debian and tried to sub in all the Fedora commands but my progress dies when I get to the ./config because Fedora says there are no config files. WTF am I doing wrong? I've been banging my head for two weeks. Fedora is my main machine and although MakeMKV works perfect on my old Mac, I'd rather use my daily.

I've tried compiling like I said above, I've tried the Flatpak version and Flatseal to give it all the permissions, I've copied over my _private_data.tar from the old Mac it's working on. What else can I try? Does anyone have the baby-steps version how to compile correctly? I've never done that before so I know I'm not doing it right. What other information do you need from me? Thanks.

You're probably hitting the scanning bug and you're on the right track downgrading to 1.17.7 is the last working version.

You'll need to post specifically with a error log of what's going on during your attempt to downgrade before anybody can offer assistance. I don't know if there's a prebuilt package for Fedora offhand of 1.17.7.

The good news is it's easy to compile from source and only requires that you've got the right packages installed beforehand.

I read through this, but when I tried the compiling instructions, I got errors.

Official instructions say, " Unpack both packages and starting from source package do the following steps:" but how far do I unpack them? Well, it turns out Peazip was high. It wasn't unpacking the sources files correctly.

I managed to get both source packages for 1.17.6 unpacked and the app complied. Still hanging and spinning though. No change in behavior. It worked the very first time I started it up after compiling but gave me a Backup Failed error. I tried a different disc (one that worked perfect on Mac) and it just spun and spun. I ejected the disc and put it back in and restarted MakeMKV. No change. I power cycled the drive. No change.

If I start MakeMKV with a disc in the drive, it's on the Information/Scanning screen for hours. If I then eject the disk, MakeMKV scans. The disc drive closes automatically and then MakeMVK changes to the Source screen and spins endlessly. So, 1.17.6 does not work for me on Fedora 42.

Next up: downloading and compiling 1.18.2. Done. Testing: Again the endless spinning. Okay.
Power cycle the drive: no change.
Quit MakeMKV and restart: no change.
Reboot system and relaunch MakeMKV: no change.
This is the drive that works fine on Mac with MakeMKV. It's a Digital Plextor PlexWriter PX-891SAF-R 24X SATA DVD +/- RW Dual Layer Burner Drive from Vinpower.

Try a different drive altogether: no change.
Run through all the above steps with the secondary drive (Pioneer with LibreDrive enabled): spins for a long time and then reads the disc. Successfully pull one rip!
Change disc: spins for a long time then reads disc. Attempt a backup. Success.
Change disc: spins for only a few moments and reads disc. Attempt backup. Backup failed.
Change disc: spins briefly and reads disc. Attempt backup. Success.
Change disc: MakeMKV does not detect disc. Restart MakeMKV. Disc detected. Scans and hangs. Restart MakeMKV. No change.
Change disc: disc detected. Scans for a very long time and hangs. Restart MakeMKV.
Change disc: disc detected. Backup failed. Restart MakeMKV. MakeMKV spins endlessly.

Do we think it's the DVD drive even though it works perfect on Mac? It seems like it's MakeMKV to me. Thoughts? Need more info? I'd like to know what to try next. Thanks.
