MakeMKV Ubuntu Hangs When Scanning Disc

Post by Mario8494 »

Hey there. I'm having an issue with MakeMKV on Ubuntu 24.04 hanging when scanning a disc.

Whenever I try to insert a DVD via an internal blu-ray player, MakeMKV scans the disc infinitely and never loads anything. I can play the video via VLC and can explore the contents of the disk in the file manager. Here's what I've tried so far:
  • sudo apt update and sudo apt install (several times)
Install MakeMKV via the Ubuntu Software app
Install MakeMKV via this post: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=224
Purged all MakeMKV installations and try again
    Changed cellwalk preferences
I've also enabled debugging and got the following output whenever I open MakeMKV with a disc inserted:

Code: Select all

I went to the ~/.MakeMKV directory and ensured the sdf file was in the _private_data.tar file. I've also manually downloaded the SDF bin from here: https://makemkv.com/sdf.bin It didn't work unfortunately.

I'm out of ideas as to what's going on at this point. Please let me know if there are any logs/other info I can provide to help out. Thanks for any and all help!

UPDATE 6/28/25: I finally fixed it! I had to uninstall MakeMKV 1.18.1 and install MakeMKV 1.17.7 for this to work.

Link to 1.17.7: https://makemkv.com/download/old/

Link on how to install: viewtopic.php?t=224

When installing 1.17.7, we wary of this when opening it for the first time: viewtopic.php?p=159208#p159208

There's something apparently wrong with 1.18.1 on Linux, so I'm just gonna stick with this version for now.

Thanks for the help guys...

I confirm, it works... Ubuntu 22.04...

-- Do the stuff with no disc!!! --

But don't forget to download BOTH files needed (Mario8494 forgot to mention the oss AND bin tar.gz not available in the link, so I found it somewehere else:
https://archive.org/details/makemkv-version-1.17.7

after you got the 2 files, follow the rest of the page:
viewtopic.php?t=224

After you install the 1.17.7 change the date of you system temporally to match the bug of validation key not available (at the time I'm writing this) with this command: sudo date --set="2025-07-15"

don't put any disk on and Register with that key :
T-iyhMMBV8nWtNo3BgMdcvypH8UL01nYmww2zFzQDtiZsdJUOaAuCURsPRQ1Hj3i75RE

Restart the program as it ask and now you can put the Blu-Ray on!
