Atmos audio streams not found

#1 Post by snurre » Wed Jul 15, 2015 9:25 pm

When opening mkv-files with atmos truehd audio, the audio stream is not listed.

Trying to transcode sound from atmos truehd to flac or lpcm.
Since atmos truehd tracks are not listed, they can not be selected.

There are issues with Atmos streams in more than just MakeMKV. Mike will have to explain what they are for MakeMKV, but I know several other projects that rely on open-source code are incompatible with Atmos.

I am using 1.9.4.

From revision history:

MakeMKV v1.8.14 ( 21.10.2014 )
Added support for Dolby Atmos audio streams

My understanding of this is that atmos streams are recognized similar to truehd and the 7.1 truehd channels can be extracted, but you will not get the object-based information.

This would be sufficient for many applications, because the extracted 7.1 audio is the atmos-mix rendered to 7.1, and if you don't have ceiling speakers this is what you play.

Atmos is an object orientated codec, ie some sounds are encoded as having come from a certain position, rather than from where the speakers are supposed to be and then the reciever mixes the audio to make it sound like it's coming from that position. The ceiling speakers have nothing to do with it other than that there's the chance that they'll actually be used.

It's not a TrueHD track with a height channel.

My Transformers: Age of Extinction Blu Ray isn't getting the audio in Windows either.

Definitely a bug.

Scanning the disc with MakeMKV.

Backups and the decryption libraries shouldn't alter the contents of the m2ts files at all other than to decrypt.

I can confirm it is not working with BD.

This is definitely a bug.
Until this is fixed the software is useless for many of the newer releases.

MakeMKV uses ffmpeg to decode TrueHD streams. On Windows and Mac OS X MakeMKV comes with pre-built libavcodec. On linux you have to ensure that you use a recent ffmpeg, one with Atmos support.

Looks like it works now with ffmpeg 2.7.2.
