Think this is a DVD disc problem, but asking to learn more...

#1 Post by olddognewtricks » Sun Mar 29, 2026 6:59 am

I have an Asus 16D1HT with 3.10 Libredrive firmware.

I haven't yet tried any UHD material as wanted to do some testing with 'normal' DVDs first just to see if any issues throw up.

So, succesfully tested some UK DVDs with no issues, I have an NTSC Region 1 DVD that has three episodes of a show per DVD, EPs 1 & 2 come off fine, however, EP 3 'drops' about two thirds of the way through the episode.

dmesg shows no errors reading the disk, however makemkv is reporting errors and specifically handbrake is reporting 44k frames received when 61k expected.

At first I thought it might be a firmware or drive issue, so had a think and did a dd read of the whole disc which worked fine, again no dmesg errors or errors reported by dd. However, when I try to handbrake transcode the copied image it fails at the same place, with the same numbers discrepancy reported.

Having thought about it this looks to me like a disc issue at manufacture time, rather than anything else?

I don't have a R1 player to be able to play it, so can't do the obvious test.

Thoughts?

Hello,
I just tried under Ubuntu, and with a BU40N the only Region 1 DVD disc I own.
It plays nice using VLC. So you may try it on your computer and see what gives ...
