Hello. I am brand new to MakeMKV. I just got one of the recommend LG Blu ray drives. I am running the current Mint Cinnamon distro. I have installed the current version of MakeMKV Linux 1.18.3. It recognizes when I load the disc, but never gets past the "loading disc" part. I have tried both the official install via compiling from source and the Flatpack version from Flathub, both have the same problem. It happens with DVDs and regular Blurays. I have not cross flashed the Drive or enabled LibreDrive yet. As I am just doing DVDs and regular Blurays now. Not 4K yet. Below are drive specs from MakeMKV. Can someone please advise me on what to do?
Drive Information:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.05
Firmware Date: 2121-04-23 13:47
Bus Encryption flags: 17
LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive Platform: MT1959
Newbie here. MakeMKV stuck loading disc on Linux
Re: Newbie here. MakeMKV stuck loading disc on Linux
Same Problem here, flatpak or from 3rd party repo (packman opensuse). That seems to be a bug in all versions.
Found a workaround in the Linux Mint forum:
Start Makemkv
Have another internal or external USB CD-Drive and insert a normal DVD. MakeMKV should load the DVD and offer copying the files. Now insert a BR disk in the BR-Drive. MakeMKV now should read the BR disc and offers the BR Disc via drop down menue.
Hope it works for you
And hopefully it will be fixed, because it looks like that bug wasn't there forever and only started to appear mid/end of last year.

On linux, the BU40N works a lot better on the 1.00 firmware.Setta wrote: ↑Fri Jan 30, 2026 3:13 amHello. I am brand new to MakeMKV. I just got one of the recommend LG Blu ray drives.
