MakeMKV starts without doing anything

Hello out there, I recently installed MakeMKV on my Debian Testing system 1.18.2 but after the start the program does nothing. The main gadget says "searching the CD drives" but stalls in this state. All menus are approachable but almost all menu items are disabled.
What can I do to make the software work?

You may be hitting a bug with some drives where it stalls while scanning, downgrading to versions <=1.17.7 may help.
