MakeMKV not writing Dolby Vision

Post by ramicio »

On Ubuntu 20.04. Downloaded a package already built (I assume it's from the official Ubuntu repo, as I don't have any else added). First I was on 1.15.1, so I figured that I may need to update. Now I'm on 1.16.7 and still the same. Mediainfo 21.09. If I use MakeMKV for Windows, it works. I don't want to do that, as it's much slower being over ethernet instead of the Linux one IS the machine where the files are stored. Do I need to build it myself for it to work?

DV rips fine for me on Mint. I'd suggest building it yourself.

How are you verifying that the DV layer is present in the MKV?

Mediainfo doesn't directly show DV. Here's an example from a DV file:

Code: Select all

Video
ID : 1
ID in the original source medium : 4113 (0x1011)
Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
Format profile : Main 10@L5.1@High
HDR format : SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible
Codec ID : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC
I use TinyMediaManager and it sees this as a DV file.

Hmm… I would say your example @bmillham, is not Dolby Vision. It looks like HDR10 only.

Here's what I'd say is DV:

Code: Select all

Video
ID : 1
ID in the original source medium : 4113 (0x1011)
Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
Format profile : Main 10@L5.1@High
HDR format : Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.07.06, BL+EL+RPU, Blu-ray compatible / SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version 1, HDR10+ Profile B compatible
Codec ID : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC
That's from MediaInfo version 21.09.

I have an old version of mediainfo: 19.09, so that explains it. Also it's probable why OP thinks DV isn't being written. The Ubuntu version is very old.

EDIT: updated to Mediainfo 22.03 and this is what the file looks like now:

Code: Select all

Video
ID : 1
ID in the original source medium : 4113 (0x1011)
Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
Format profile : Main 10@L5.1@High
HDR format : Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.07.06, BL+EL+RPU, Blu-ray compatible / SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible
Codec ID : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC
So yea, OP probably has an outdated mediainfo.

OP said they're on MediaInfo 21.09 in the first post.

Opps, I missed that he was on 21.09.

So I guess the question then is why when I rip on linux that I get DV and the OP does not?

The Ubuntu version I have is 1.16.7. Is that not the newest version?

21.09 (or in my case 22.03) is the mediainfo version. 1.16.7 is the current MakeMKV version.

Yeah, so I don't know what "The Ubuntu version is very old" meant.

I don't use MakeMKV on Linux, so I'm guessing a little bit. That said, I think MakeMKV links to some libraries on your system and those libraries might be out of date.

The Linux build post (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=224) has talk about libavcodec among other things. I have no idea if a certain version of that is needed for DV support.

DV support officially landed in MakeMKV 1.15.3.

I just do the basic build. I don't worry about libavcodec. From reading the install instructions I think it only matters if you are transcoding the audio to FLAC, etc.
