This might be a rookie question, I am a Linux newb with just enough knowledge to be dangerous I think. Running Centos7
I was able to successfully install 1.9.5 with some help with an error message from this forum. Now it's time to upgrade to 1.9.7.
Do I need to remove everything from 1.9.5 and recompile everything for 1.9.7? And is there a quick and painless way to do that?

I tried building with the latest ffmpeg (2.8.0) and it failed.
Falling back to 2.7.x and it succeeded, both cases using the method and configure listed here
