installing 1.15.x fails on Ubuntu

Running Ubuntu 18.04 desktop. Downloaded and installed from oss tarball. When attempting to launch, receive error "application failed to initialize". Did not notice anything concerning during the make procedure. Configure ran clean.

1. Are there any gotchas for making the app from source?
2. Is there a prebuilt binary for Ubuntu (.deb file) that can just be installed?
Thank you.

Also, is there a paid version that does not expire? I would gladly pay to avoid these gyrations when the app expires!!!!!!!!!!!
