external dvd drive (linux)

#1 Post by raskells » Fri Jul 31, 2020 7:16 pm

i plan to buy a new laptop, which unfortunately will not be shipped with an optical drive anymore.

as far as external drives are concerned, I have no experience at all, so perhaps you can recommend me a dvd drive that is guaranteed to work (especially with makemkv) under linux?

thank you in advance

Up until recently, I have used a Vantec NexStar DX case with an LG WH165NS40 as my tried-and-true combination. I recently installed the LG drive into a tower case and started experimenting with it and Ubuntu Desktop. The drive reads discs fine in that installation, and I have no reason to doubt it would also work if it were still in the external case.

I have a slim blue ray RW that I bought for use with my laptop some time ago.

It is an LG BP50NB40
Currently about 5 years old, but is powered entirely by USB and has worked like a champ for me.
I just tested it with MakeMKV 1.15.3 on Fedora linux and it worked like a charm copying a BD.

It is definitely slower than the internal BD on my desktop, but I think that is likely because it is 1) older and 2) USB2.
Newer ones are available that are USB3 so it would be much faster.
