Are there any External UHD Blu-Ray Drives in the US Market?

Post by gaudog » Wed May 01, 2019 8:22 pm

I apologize in advance for the newb question, I don't know too much about this stuff, but I was looking for a plug and play compatibility way for playing UHD discs. Not so concerned about the hardware recs if computers in the future can play. I'm aware of the Pioneer BDR-XD07J-UHD but no English software. I also see Amazon littered with external players claiming UHD playback but from unknown brands with little or no review.

I purchased 2 different drives on Amazon claiming to be 4k, UHD ready but neither would read Avengers Infinity War "4K ULTRA HD" retail blu-ray.

There are only 5 reviews on Amazon for the Pioneer BDR-XD07J-UHD with no comment regarding success with 4k UHD.
One of the questions was:
Will it play 4K on iMac’s current 2018 5K 27” radeon pro 580 graphics? the specs mention intel 620-640 graphics requirement.
Answer: Unfortunately it will not. The Intel 600 series graphics is required.

The Japanese language documentation could also present a problem if there are any install glitches.

The HP Omen 17t laptop which I am buying for has an Intel 8750h CPU with Intel 630 graphics and a 4k, UHD screen. However, it also has a GTX 1060 card. I am not sure whether the GTX 1060 would interfere with the Blu-Ray finding the 630 graphics.

The HP also has HDMI 2.0, mini DisplayPort and USB 3.1 gen1.

Has anybody looked into the drives from <jonghotti> or <billycar11>?

I was hoping to get 1 portable Ultra HD drive which could play the newest, 4k UHD movies and burn at least 50GB data discs.

Is this possible?

When i first started ripping 4k blurays i had an LGbneu50 it worked really well until the drive failed and i had to get a new drive.i think they stopped making that particular drive.i was one of alex's forst customers and he set me up with a good drive that has a vantec enclosure two years later it still works
