it not the actual drive model i send you an xd08 the fw is from an xd08u makemkv now supports all UHD pioneers even on the latest fw
What do you mean MakeMKV now supports all UHD Pioneers even on latest FW? Like if I find any Pioneer UHD drive on FB Marketplace I can purchase that and have you flash it? Looks like remote flashing is $25. Or would it need to be sent to you?

How do these XD08's compare to the other models you don't have in stock? Are these XD08's somehow not as ideal or not as good in any way when ripping compared to the BDR-S13U's or BDR-X13U's? I'm new to all this sorry and I just want to buy once and not buy a lesser version then realize I should have purchased a better one like mentioned in the last sentence but I don't know if they are actually better when it comes to ripping or just more premium quality physical product? Thank you.
After MakeMKV started supporting LibreDrive on Pioneer drives, Pioneer released a firmware update that specifically disabled LibreDrive. Pioneer firmware update February 2023 Pioneer firmware dated from December 2022 onward did not support LibreDrive and it could not be flashed to an older, supported firmware. That was bad.

Very recently, MakeMKV has started supporting LibreDrive on Pioneer drives again, even ones with the December 2022 firmware. SDF update November 2025 That is good.

LibreDrive support, however, does not mean that a Pioneer drive is automatically able to rip UHDs. If the drive is a model that has UHD capability, then with LibreDrive capability, it will now be able to rip UHDs. If the drive model does not have UHD capability, even with LibreDrive it won't be able rip UHDs.

Some Pioneer drives that don't have UHD capability can be cross-flashed to a version that does have UHD capability. The tools to do so are not publicly available to my knowledge. If a Pioneer drive has the dreaded December 2022 or later firmware, it probably can not be cross flashed to add UHD capability. (Never say never of course.)

Your best bet if you're going to buy a used Pioneer drive is to get one that came from Pioneer with UHD capability.

Exactly what I said makemkv supports all UHD pioneers out of the box for UHD ripping.

But non uhd pioneers are still not cross flashable to UHD after 12/22 unless purchased from a flasher.

Remote flashing is still not possible after 12/22 fw too

After 4.5 years of trusty service and sometimes near continuous usage, my Asus BW-16D1HT finally bit the dust this morning. It was starting to occasionally get stuck trying to read a disc, and only a reboot would fix it - now it got stuck and after trying everything, it reads any disc, BR or UHD, as blank.

So I've got an email into Billy :)

Thanks for the terrific resource here. Long time fan.

I picked up my Pioneer XD08B from the post office a few days. Everything is working and I'm learning how to do this backup thing. Thanks Billy, I appreciate what you do for all of us.

Probably a dumb question, but wouldn't this mean we can just purchase a BDR-XD08UMB-S from Pioneer direct and as long as we have MakeMKV, we'll be able to rip 4k blu rays? Or, what am I missing that makes the non-u BDR-XD08s necessary? Thanks for the insight!

Pioneer stopped manufacturing optical drives at the beginning of 2025.

Oh wow, well that would explain it. Since it seems Pioneer made the best drives, what will be the best option for the future, assuming that soon, all new Pioneer drives will be gone. Used? Another brand?

The way it is heading, optical drives may be gone altogether in the next few years. LG are the only manufacturer left that make UHD compatible drives. ASUS, Buffalo and Verbatim use LG drives in their enclosures.
Cheers :D

Billy is NOT a scam! He was fast professional and dependable. The drive works much better than previous ones and does exactly as advertised. I would not hesitate to use Billy again. 8)
I sent Billy $25 for a flasher and he hasn't replied to me for more than a day. Something's not right. I want my money back.

This makes you feel something's "not right"? It's a hobby for most & side business for others (they have a life & maybe a full time job). Sometimes things take "more than a day".

You have Billy's e-mail address, why not contact him directly instead of complaining in the forums?

I'm not - new user (2025-11-27) & first post.

Or it's a bot (user name "AI_Synex") & somebody's looking to trash the forums or a person.
