Original Firmware request: Verbatim 43888 - LG BU40N

Post by robertj89 »

Hi all,

I wished my first post wasn't a cry for help, but here we are.

I've purchased a Verbatim 43888 / LG BU40N and successfully flashed it to 1.03.
I've tried many solutions on these forums to problems but I can't get the drive to read consistently.
Most of the time it doesn't even recognize the disk, with the following errors.

Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:INVALID FIELD IN CDB' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N 1.03 MO6P7IG4106' at offset '23668455424'
udf: node fe/efe failed!
udf: UDF mount: disc not properly formatted or damaged disc (rootdirs failing)

When it does load the process fails with a similar CDB error usually around 20 minutes in on many of the blu-ray disks I've tried.

I now wish to return the drive as I believe its faulty ( if you believe that might not be true I am happy to try other things )
But I forgot to create backup dump of the 1.05 firmware, does anybody have that lying around so I can restore the drive to original before sending it back.

Thank you,
Robert

Get two clean microfiber cloths. The first one should be slightly damp (I usually use distilled water just to be on the safe side), with this one you should clean the disc you want to put into the drive. Make sure the second one is dry, and use it to dry the disc after cleaning it. Do this even when the disc appears to already be spotless. Then insert the disc.

If most discs are still failing even after being cleaned, I believe the issue probably comes from the drive indeed. You could also try cleaning the drive lens (not with a cleaning disc, you should clean it on your own, sometimes even a dry&clean microfiber cloth is enough, according to some people). I would not necessarily recommend using alcohol when cleaning the lens, some tech people have warned against it.

This was advice from Billycar for a full size drive, but I would assume being cautious is good advice even for a slim drive.

I believe this is the official LG Flasher for BU40N 1.05, if you're willing to risk it.

The original BU40N 1.05 firmware can be found here: viewtopic.php?p=196053#p196053

thank you both, I've tried cleaning the disks without any luck
Not sure if I want to risk it with the .exe.

My current plan is to buy another drive. Copy the firmware.
If that drive works well I can just return the faulty one.
If they both have the same issues than maybe it is my disks that are faulty rather than the drive.

Thank you again.

You cannot dump the firmware from the drive. For all MT1959 drives with firmware dated from 2020 or newer, only the cal data can be extracted, not the entire firmware.

The link I provided is to the thread I created which has the original LG firmware flasher tools for the most popular models all in the one place.

The link I posted is the download link I found on the official LG website (see for yourself here : https://www.lg.com/us/support/product/lg-BU40N - then click on "Manuals & Software" if you want a proof that this is the official download link).

Admittedly, I don't believe there's all that much risk in flashing with this exe (I did do an antivirus scan just in case and the file seems to be clean), I merely said "if you're willing to risk it" because technically, each firmware flash presents a risk, no matter how small (for example if your laptop battery is low and you forgot to plug in your computer to a power source, and the laptop suddenly powers off during the flashing process, you will probably brick your drive - and that's just one example of something that can go wrong). So that was more my way of talking.

I did a diff on Linux with the file I linked to and the file Marty linked to. They are the same file with different names, so you can flash with either if you wish to go through with it.

That is good to know, I was thinking of using the read firmware option on the SDFTool Flasher.
But that will not output a valid firmware file to already flashed drive?

I'll give the exe a go in that case.
Thanks

Attempting to dump the firmware of a brand new BU40N with 1.05 firmware would not create a full, "flashable" firmware file (if I remember correctly, it's because the firmware is encrypted).

Have a look at the makemkvcon firmware dump commands for MTK19xx :

Code: Select all

makemkvcon f -n -t mtk19xx help
(This will also list *some*, albeit not all, rawflash commands)

MTK19xx firmware module v1.30

Commands:

dump [auto|full|user]
Dumps firmware image
dump full - dumps full rom image (if not disabled in firmware)
dump user - dumps non-volatile user data
dump auto - dumps full image if possible, user data otherwise

What SDFTool Flasher does when you "read" the firmware is probably a "dump auto" - and in that case, it would just choose to do the equivalent of a "dump user" since a "dump full" wouldn't work.

managed to get it sorted.
the dump from the new drive was user only indeed, learn something new everyday.

had to pull out an old windows 7 laptop to flash using the exe.
an old forum post really helped me out there.

Thanks all
