Occasional CD ripping failure in flashed Buffalo drive

Post by SecurityDevice »

Has anyone noticed problems with ripping CDs with a Buffalo drive after flashing the firmware?

I bought a new external Buffalo BRXL-PUS6U3B-US Blu-Ray burner in March 2026 and immediately flashed it with the BU40N 1.03 firmware with the SDFtool Flasher, as directed in the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide thread.

I did not check to see if CD ripping was working OK before the firmware downgrade. Afterward, though, although BD and UHD BD discs do rip just fine with MakeMKV, some ordinary CDs have problems when ripping in other apps.

Basically, at the end of some discs, there will be a read failure of some kind. In EAC this manifests as the drive being done but EAC is stuck at 98.8% still waiting for data, and I needed to reboot to get the process to die. In CUERipper it just manifests as an IOCtl error and the rip aborts.

The same discs rip OK in my Pioneer BDR-XD05S.
